Integrated Media Arts (IMA) is a cross-disciplinary major that reflects the engagement of new imaging technologies in contemporary art with a study of their cultural impact. It focuses on artistic practice that is driven by ideas, supported by a versatile skill set, and is grounded in digital technologies. With an openness to integrating traditional arts and older technologies with new media, the IMA program is designed to meet the needs of the art student of the 21st century. The use of digital technology as a sophisticated art-making tool within a broad, cross-disciplinary context is central to the program. The opportunity for interdepartmental investigation and collaboration within the Hartford Art School and across the University, exploring new media with traditional art disciplines, is an underlying principle of the major.

IMA is for the nontraditional art student who is excited by the prospect of moving between genres and disciplines, and working with others that reflects contemporary international art practice. We encourage students to participate in inter-collegiate collaborations, especially with The Hartt School’s Department of Composition and Department of Dance; the College of Engineering, Technology and Architecture; and the Cinema Department in the College of Arts and Sciences. We help our students discover new possibilities among an array of studio art practices and critical studies and research including: multi-media performance, animation, installation, interactive design, digital fabrication.

IMA provides a core curriculum addressing video production, experimental animation, digital imaging, web projects, creative coding and visual culture. Video Arts, Animation Arts and Computing Arts are the three tracks of focused study within the major. Integrated Media Arts exposes our students to a critical and historical knowledge of the field, developing technical proficiency in a number of areas, providing a diverse skill set and numerous career opportunities. We expect our students to define new artistic directions for themselves and for the field in general.
