2019 Georgette and Richard Koopman Distinguished Chair in the Visual Arts

The Georgette and Richard Koopman Distinguished Chair in the Visual Arts is an annual artist-in-residency program that brings prominent artist/teachers to the Hartford Art School. Mark Burns presents recent works while working with students in the Ceramics Department for the academic year 2018-19.

Visiting Artist Lecture

Ricky Nierva, Animation Art Director/Production Designer

Visiting Artist Lecture Ricky Nierva has worked in the Animation Industry for over 25 years. A 21-year veteran of
Pixar Animation Studios, he led a team of talented artists to create the visual look of the
Academy Award winning film UP. He was the production designer for Monsters University
and the lead character designer for Monster's Inc. He won an Annie Award for Outstanding
Individual Achievement for Character Art Direction for Finding Nemo. He contributed to
visual development for Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur, COCO, BAO and numerous Pixar
projects in development. Nierva is also an experienced storyboard artist that has created
production boards for Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., UP, and a Pixar feature film currently in
development.
 
Nierva illustrated a children's book published by Random House, titled M is for Monster.
His artwork is also featured in the Pixar Art of books for Monster's Inc., Finding Nemo,
Monsters University, The Good Dinosaur, Inside Out, and The Art of Pixar by Chronicle
Books.
 
In 2017, Nierva was appointed by California Governor Jerry Brown as a board member of
the California Film Commission.
 
Nierva attended California Institute of the Arts where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts
degree in Character Animation. He credits his visual style to close mentor and famed Warner
Bros. and Disney designer, the late Maurice Noble. Ricky has worked with talented artists at
Turner Feature Animation, Warner Bros., Baer Animation, and Hanna Barbera.
 
Nierva was a TEDx speaker in Athens, Greece. He has also given talks at Adobe, EG Conference, Charles Schulz Museum, and the Disney SPARC conference. His artwork has been featured worldwide, notably at the MoMA, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, and Ghibli Museum.
