David Wakefield, horn, joined the American Brass Quintet while a doctoral student at The Juilliard School in 1976. His early teachers were Phil Farkas, Douglas Hill, Caesar LaMonaca and John Cerminaro.  At Juilliard he studied  and James Chambers. 

In 2011, he joined the horn faculty at Hartt as a Senior Artist Teacher.  In addition to teaching horn, he coaches chamber music there.  In 1976 he joined the Aspen Music Festival and School horn and chamber music faculty. In 1987 he joined the Juilliard horn and chamber music faculty and from 1995-2000 and 2006-2008 was Senior Associate Dean at Juilliard running the orchestral program there.

As a member of the American Brass Quintet, Mr. Wakefield toured worldwide, all 50 states, recorded more than 40 CD's, and was one of the first American musicians invited to teach and perform in the People's Republic of China after the Cultural Revolution. He retired from that group in 2014, having been in the group for 38 years.

Currently principal horn of the Little Orchestra Society in New York, he has also performed with the New York and Vienna Philharmonics, New York City Ballet, New York City and Metropolitan Opera Orchestras, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke's, Saint Louis Symphony, Fort Worth Symphony, and the Opera Orchestra of New York.

He has premiered more than 250 new works with the American Composers Orchestra, Parnassus, New Music Consort, Speculum Musicae, and the American Brass Quintet working with composers such as John Adams, Bruce Adolphe, Milton Babbitt, Jan Bach, Robert Beaser, Luciano Berio, William Bolcom, Elliott Carter, Billy Childs, John Corigliano, Mario Davidovsky, Jacob Druckman, Eric Ewazen, Philip Glass, Paul Moravec, Anthony Plog, Ned Rorem, Christopher Rouse, Huang Ruo, David Sampson, Gunther Schuller, William Schuman, Robert Starer, Joan Tower, George Tsontakis, Virgil Thomson, Vladimir Ussachevsky, and Melinda Wagner.

He has also performed in the pit in numerous Broadway productions as well as on commercial recordings.

Mr. Wakefield presented master classes at Rome's Academy of St. Cecilia from 1991-93 and is the author of A Comprehensive Survey of Orchestral Excerpt Books for Horn.
