Professor Kurtz holds undergraduate degrees in linguistics and music, and a master’s in sound recording from McGill University. He has worked as a recording engineer for the Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox, Massachusetts as well as the Banff Centre for the Arts in Banff, Alberta. From 1998-2000, Justin held the position of music technologist at the University of Ottawa, teaching courses in acoustics and music technology. In 2001, Justin relocated to New England to teach at The Hartt School and in 2009 was appointed program chair of the department of music production and technology. His company, Laurel Hill Recording, specializes in location recording of classical and acoustic music. Past and current projects include recordings for the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, jazz artist Noah Baerman, choral group Archangel Voices, and composers Chen Yi and Jennifer Higdon. His projects have appeared on labels including Naxos, Albany, and Innova records.
