The Allen Library is located on the lower level of the Mortensen Library. The Allen Library houses reference and circulating materials in support of the University’s music, dance, and performing arts programs. Its holdings of more than 85,000 items include 20,000 books and bound journals about music, 400 print and electronic journal titles, 40,000 music scores, 1,200 DVDs and videocassettes, over 20,000 sound recordings, and thousands of tracks available through online audio databases. The audio collection includes thousands of recorded performances of Hartt faculty and students.

Circulation

Matriculated Hartt Summerterm students may borrow circulating books and scores for four weeks, with one renewal for an additional four weeks. They may borrow sound and video recordings for three days, with one renewal. Non-matriculated Hartt Summerterm students may borrow circulating materials for one week, with one renewal for an additional week. They may use sound and video recordings inside the Allen Library.

Listening and Viewing

The library has listening rooms equipped with turntables, CD players, cassette decks, VCRs, and DVD players. There are also listening carrels for using audio materials. Two seminar rooms (one large, one small) with AV and computer projection are available for teaching, group study, and meetings.

Computers

Public iMacs include the full Microsoft Office suite, online resources, and some music software. Digital camcorders, audio Zoom recorders, USB microphones, tripods, iPads, MacBooks (with music notation software Finale and Sibelius), and Lenovo ThinkPad laptops are available for brief checkout. Reading and study areas have wireless Internet access.

Scanning, Photocopying, and Printing

Self-service photocopiers, printers, and a free public scanner are located at the front of the library. Photocopies cost $0.10 per page. Printouts are $0.05 per page. One scanner is available and is free to use. Cash is not accepted by either the photocopier or the pay printer. University IDs with HawkCash may be used to pay for copies and printouts. Funds may be added to a HawkCash account at the vending machine on the main level of Mortensen Library or at the HawkCard ID Office in Gengras Student Union. The minimum that can be added is $1. The vending machine does not accept coins.

ID and Email Accounts

All students and faculty must get a University ID at the HawkCard ID Office, located at the Gengras Student Union (860.768.5343). You will need a University of Hartford ID in order to borrow items from the library. When you come to the library for the first time, you will also need to fill out a brief Patron Registration Form.

It is crucial that all summer students and faculty have current University of Hartford email accounts. You will need an email account in order to access the Internet via the wireless network in The Hartt School, Allen Library, and all other wireless hot spots around campus. You will also need an email account to access the library’s electronic sources from off campus—these include Oxford Music Online (“Grove”), the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music, Music Industry Data, RILM, WorldCat, and the streaming audio databases: Naxos Music Library, Classical Music Library, DRAM (Database of Recorded American Music), Smithsonian Global Sound, and Jazz Music Library, as well as the streaming video database, Dance in Video.
