Music Program DirectorMaggie Wyporek Spear is a Connecticut native who began her private trombone studies at The Hartt School Community Division (HCD) with Mr. Scott Bean. Maggie joined the HCD team in 2011, holding the roles of Music Program Manager and Music Program Director prior to her current appointment as Assistant Director, Strategic Growth and Programming. During her tenure with HCD, she has overseen the growth of core music programming, the expansion of summer and academic year program offerings, as well as developed efficiencies to allow for a more streamline experience for families and faculty alike. Her work at HCD aligns her personal and professional passions, encouraging the development and support of transformative arts communities where students become a part of something larger than themselves.


Prior to her work at HCD, she worked in a myriad of education, research, and arts organizations including the Hartford Public Schools, VSA Massachusetts, and the Strategic Education Research Partnership (SERP) based out of Harvard University. Maggie holds a B.M. in Jazz Studies (trombone) with a concentration in Music-In-Education from the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston, MA, and an Ed.M. in Arts in Education from Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. In her time outside of HCD, she enjoys playing trombone with both big bands and wind ensembles, as well as biking and fishing with her husband, Kevin.
