Composition at The Hartt School Community Division

Compose Yourself introduces students to the creative process and inspires to express themselves musically. Students work in small classes with our composition faculty to learn fundamental concepts and skills that they will apply to create original music. Each 6-week session is focused on a different theme: 

Register

Songwriting

For Students in Grades 7–12
January–March (6 classes)
Thursdays, 6:30–7:30 p.m.

Instructor: Luke Nelson

This session gives students the skills and knowledge to best express themselves through song. Students study music theory, develop performance skills, and examine classic songs. Understanding song structure, developing rhyming techniques, and discovering new musical styles help every songwriter unleash her or his full potential. A piano will be available for students or they can bring their own guitars. Accompanying skills will also be taught in this class to best support and present each musical work. Whether you are just beginning to write songs, or are a seasoned troubadour, this course will help you find your voice and make your strongest songs.

Prerequisites: Students must read music and/or TAB and have studied an instrument or voice for two years.

Film Scoring

Instructor: Jessica Rudman

This class introduces students to the world of film scoring. Students learn fundamental concepts and approaches to creating music for movies, tv, and video games. They use music technology to compose their own soundtracks to short films and scenes.  

Prerequisites: Students should have access to a computer with a Digital Audio Workstation program capable of importing video files to complete work outside of class. Acceptable programs include recent versions of: GarageBand, Reaper, Logic, or other comparable programs. Please contact Jessica Rudman at rudman@hartford.edu with any questions about the technology requirement.

Writing for Your Instrument or Voice

Instructor: Jessica Rudman

This session allows students to express themselves by writing music using their own instrument or voice. Students experience the creative process—from finding inspiration to refining and developing their ideas into a finished composition, which they will perform at the end of the course.  

Prerequisites: Students should have at least 1 year of study on their instrument or voice.

Electronic Music Composition

October—November

Junior Division for Students in Grades 4–8
Saturdays from 12:30–1:30 p.m.

Senior Division for Students in Grades 912
Sundays, 1:452:45 p.m.

Instructor: Jessica Rudman

In this session, students create electronic music using computers, tablets, and more. They are introduced to compositional techniques and foundational concepts relating to music technology and digital audio. While some specific programs and general types of software will be introduced, this class is mainly focused on developing students' imaginations and compositional skills.     

Prerequisites: Students should have access to a computer or tablet with a Digital Audio Workstation program (GarageBand, Reaper, Logic, Cubase, or other comparable program) to complete work outside of class. Students may also be asked to download and use free music software for some activities. Please contact Jessica Rudman at rudman@hartford.edu with any questions about the technology requirement.
