Young Composers Project: Summer Edition studentsThe Young Composers Project (YCP) Summer Edition is a five-day intensive workshop for students interested in writing music. Each year focuses on a different musical topic, and this year’s theme will be “Composing for the Big Screen.” Students will be given instruction on composition techniques, approaches to scoring films, and the use of relevant software to create electronic scores. Participants will work in small groups and one-on-one with YCP Director Jessica Rudman to develop scores for film scenes over the course of the week, and their compositions will be presented in a showcase on the final day.

The YCP Summer Edition is for students with interest in

  • creating music for movies or TV
  • working with computer software to compose electronic music
  • learning to express themselves through music
  • gaining a deeper understanding of how music works
  • sharing their music with other students
  • studying with professional mentor composers

Young Composers Project: Summer Edition student composerYCP Summer Edition is designed for students both with and without any prior composing experience. New students will gain a foundation in composing, while more experienced students will improve their compositional technique and deepen their knowledge of music. This year students will can choose to participate in the beginner track (for new students) or the intermediate/advanced track (for returning students or those with extensive prior experience). Students who did not participate in YCP Summer in 2017 but who are interested in the intermediate/advanced track should contact the program director, Jessica Rudman, at rudman@hartford.edu to inquire.

Technology

Students will be using laptop computers with digital audio workstation software capable of working with video. We will primarily use Garageband, but if a student is already familiar with another software and is able to bring their own computer, they can use their preferred software. Acceptable software includes recent versions of: Garageband, Logic Pro, ProTools, Cubase, and Reaper.  FL Studio may be used if the Video Player 2 extension has been installed (note: the demo version will only allow 30 seconds of video and will not be sufficient for this program).

Students are encouraged to bring their own computer if possible, but a limited number of Mac laptops with Garageband can be provided to students who are not able to bring a computer with appropriate software.  When registering, please indicate if the student will be bringing their own computer or will need to use one of the school computers. School laptops will be allocated on a first-come basis to registered students who indicate they need a computer provided.

If you have any questions about the technology relating to this program, please contact the program director, Jessica Rudman, at rudman@hartford.edu to inquire.

Works Composed by YCP Summer Students

The following pieces were composed during the 2016 YCP Summer Edition. The 2016 theme was “Art Song,” and the compositions feature a solo singer and piano. The theme for YCP Summer changes each year, so the recordings below may feature different performing forces than are available this year. See above for a description of this year’s theme.
