Karla McClain, Canticum Choir

Karla McClain received her Master of Science in Music Education from Central Connecticut State University and her Bachelor of Music in Education from Ohio Wesleyan University. She received her National Board Certification in Early Adolescent/Young Adulthood Music in the fall of 2013. McClain taught choir and general music at Bristow Middle School in West Hartford, Conn. for many years. She currently teaches 7th and 8th grade choir at Irving A. Robbins Middle School and elementary general music at East Farms School in Farmington. She is also the director of Voices of Bristow, an auditioned choir of students in grades 6−8, and acts as music director for the Bristow Players drama productions. In 2011 she was a finalist for West Hartford Teacher of the Year.

Outside of school, McClain has sung with the Connecticut Composer’s Choir and at various churches. She currently performs with the Connecticut Gilbert & Sullivan Society and plays trombone with the Harmonious Brass Ensemble. Her other passions include music technology and world music. She has studied Ghanaian drumming and dance as well as Latin/Afro-Cuban drumming with Kwasi Dunyo, Karen Howard, and Anthony DeQuattro.
