Percussion

Kevin ThompsonKevin Thompson offers a fresh approach to the world of percussion music. A native of Connecticut, he began his percussion education at the age of six as a member of the Col. John Chester Fife and Drum Corps. As a member of this group for nearly 10 years.

Thompson studied rudimental drumming with Brendan D. Mason. Thompson’s background as a rudimental drummer has fueled a strong commitment to help bridge the gap between concert and marching percussion. Thompson has performed as a solo, chamber, and orchestral percussionist all across the country. He has performed with Grammy-award winning percussionist Shane Shanahan in NYC (2017), and he was invited to play in the PAS Drummer’s Heritage concert, sharing the stage with many fine drummers including Steve Fidyk and Mark Reilly (2016). Thompson has worked with the Danbury Symphony, Playhouse on Park, and works as a local freelance musician. As a solo percussionist, he is a two-time winner of the James Furman recital competition (2015, 2013), and a winner of the PAS Collegiate Snare Drum Competition (2011). Thompson has performed with several different drum corps, including the Madison Scouts and the 10-time world champion Cadets. While with these groups he had the privilege of working with some of the finest educators in this field, including Lee Beddis and Colin McNutt. Thompson performed with Colin McNutt and members of the Cadets drum line as a part of several different clinics presented by Yamaha (2015). He had the privilege of performing with the Connecticut Patriots Fife and Drum Corps at PASIC, as a part of a clinic exploring the art of traditional New England rudimental drumming (2014). Thompson is also a member of the prestigious Performance 20/20 program, The Hartt School’s honors chamber music ensemble.

Thompson is an active clinician/educator, currently serving as the Percussion Director for Newtown High School (Sandy Hook, CT), and as the Battery Caption Head/Arranger for the 7th Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps (New London, CT). He has presented clinics where he helps to bridge the gap between the football field and the concert hall, allowing high school students involved in the marching arts to extend their abilities to other areas of percussion music. Thompson is a proud member of the Vic Firth Education Team, as well as the D’Addario Education Collective.

Currently, Thompson is a Doctoral candidate at the University of Hartford’s Hartt School. He has studied classical percussion with Benjamin Toth (The Hartt School), Doug Perry (Western Connecticut State University), and David Smith (Western Connecticut State University); jazz vibraphone with Ted Piltzecker; and world percussion with Joseph Galeota (African drumming), and Shane Shanahan (hand drumming). He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Percussion Performance from Western Connecticut State University, and a Master’s degree from the University of Hartford’s The Hartt School.
