Student Scholarship Support

The Hillyer College Board of Visitors embarked upon an unprecedented effort to sustain and improve the educational experience offered at Hillyer College. Each of four key initiatives plays an integral role in creating not only a vital educational institution at present, but one that will sustain itself for generations to come.

Through the generosity of many alumni, parents, and friends of the College, existing programs have been expanded and new ones developed, a number of scholarship opportunities have been created to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student population, and much-needed facilities improvements have been made.

Student Scholarship Support

Gifts to support student scholarships directly benefit our students, and every single gift - regardless of size - has a lasting impact. Examples of scholarships that have been created include: 
  • The Hillyer College Alumni Scholarship
  • The Mehri Family Endowment for the top two students in the sophomore class
  • The Voldstad Family Endowed Scholarship for academically strong sophomores with unexpected financial need
  • The Giorgio Griswold Wasserman Scholarship
  • The Benjamin and Minnie Goldenberg Memorial Scholarship for returning sophomores in the top 5% of the class
  • The Shaw Family Foundation Endowed Scholarship for academic excellence
  • The Charles & Susan Seeman Family Endowment for sophomores who are going to continue their studies at the Barney School of Business
  • The Wagar Family Scholarship for students entering Hillyer College from Bulkeley High School or Hartford Public Schools
  • The Mihalek Scholarship for students who intend to study business

Program Development

Gifts for program support have helped the College create new concentrations and academic opportunities including:  
  • Environmental Studies students who traveled to the River Museum in Essex, CT
  • Education Studies students who met regularly to prepare for the national PRAXIS examination
  • Development of the Honors Program which supported campus lectures and local and international travel
  • Creation of a second semester humanities/English honors course for freshmen that brought authors to Hillyer to meet with the students
  • Creation of a sophomore Social Sciences/Natural Sciences course and courses in marine biology, environmental studies of the Connecticut ecosystem, and sports in society
  • Establishment of the winter term honors course which allowed students to travel to Hawaii to study the art and culture of the Polynesian peoples in cooperation with the University of Hawaii.

Faculty Support

Gifts to support faculty members have enabled Hillyer professors to attend and participate in professional activities designed to either enhance student learning or advance their scholarship. Faculty support initiatives have enabled creation of: 
  • The Pauline and Joseph Gareau Endowment to support the research interests of our faculty members
  • The Jay Holden Camp Faculty Fellowship in honor of Hillyer's first faculty member, to support a faculty member with either new learning and teaching strategies or research support
  • The Hillyer College Award for Excellence in Advising to recognize the importance of the one-to-one advising relationship that embodies the mission of Hillyer
  • The Hillyer College Award for Scholarship and Creativity to recognize the work of faculty members
  • The John Roderick Fellowship for Innovation in Pedagogy to support new initiatives that enhance student learning in the classroom

Student Engagement

Gifts to support student engagement have resulted in students taking greater responsibility for their learning through the following activities: 
  • Enrollment in The Summer Bridge Program where new students spend one week on campus prior to their first year, to enhance writing, math, or science skills
  • Attending performances and post-performance discussions at a variety of professional theater companies (e.g. The Hartford Stage, Theatre Works, Yale Rep and more) to supplement their English and drama classes
  • Visiting museums such as the Wadsworth Athenaeum and the Harriet Beecher Stowe home in Hartford as well as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to supplement their art history classes
  • Visiting a nature preserve in South Deerfield, MA to supplement their biology classes
  • Participating in faculty research projects as well as their own, and presenting their findings at professional conferences around the country and around the world
  • Studying marine ecology at Mystic Aquarium
The College has an ambitious goal to have upwards of one-fifth of our students learn experientially. Thanks to support of this initiative, our students were able to travel to England, Spain, Bermuda, Costa Rica, Ireland, France, and Mexico. Students traveled within the United States to help with relief efforts through the Alternative Spring Break, and were honored with the University's Community Service Award.
