Department of Mathematics

The Mathematics and Science Department of Hillyer College offers introductory Biology, Environmental Science, and Nutrition courses, as well as a variety of mathematics courses including College Algebra, First-level Calculus, and Statistics.  These are taught in small supportive, yet challenging, classes designed to teach students the skills and knowledge they will need in order to succeed in a wide variety of majors that require scientific or mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills.  Individual support services and close advising is readily available.  The Math/Science Department is home to two special programs, the Business Concentration, and the Associate in Science degree program.

The Business Concentration prepares students who plan to complete a four year Bachelor’s Degree in a business school, providing them with the first two years of a general education and introductory business program.  The Concentration offers students such transferable business courses as Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, and Business Statistics, along with support, mentoring, and advising, as they plan their course selections and future programs.  These students can earn an Associate in Arts (AA) degree when they complete the two-year Hillyer program and move on to their four year college.

The Associate in Science (AS) degree program is ideal for students interested in medicine, health science, biology, chemistry, and other STEM fields.  Students begin a typical, rigorous science curriculum with access to upper-level laboratory courses—all while still being able to take advantage of Hillyer College’s small class sizes and support resources.  The program helps students to develop the skills and knowledge necessary   for success in often-challenging advanced undergraduate and graduate study that will follow completion of the AS degree at Hillyer.
