Alumni Profile - Tom Del Zoppo
Tom Del Zoppo has logged a lot of miles since he graduated from Hillyer in 1986. Del Zoppo is currently managing director for the Hong Kong office of HSBC, one of the largest banks in the world.
Before joining HSBC, Del Zoppo was managing director for both U.S. and international equity sales trading at J.P. Morgan, which is headquartered in New York City.
Del Zoppo says the distance he’s traveled in his career is largely due to the experience he had as a student at Hillyer. “The reason why I’ve been successful, and the reason I have my current skills, can be traced back to the basics that I learned at Hillyer.”
“Run of the mill” is how Del Zoppo describes his performance as a high school student. “I knew that Hillyer provided a good foundation for learning, and that’s what I needed. The discipline I learned at Hillyer allowed me to go on and complete my undergraduate degree at Columbia University with an economics major. I needed direction and structure, and that’s what Hillyer provided.”
Del Zoppo, who also received an M.A. from Columbia, has provided opportunities for other Hillyer students to gain confidence by experiencing, on a first-hand basis, life on Wall Street. While he was still at J.P. Morgan, Del Zoppo made it possible for Hillyer honor students to spend several days at the company so that they could learn about career opportunities in securities and finance. Del Zoppo believes that’s one way he can give something back to the College that gave him a boost when he most needed it.
