Otto Wahl is professor of psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Hartford. His work includes numerous research articles and presentations related to stigma and to media depictions of mental illnesses.
In the first of a two-part interview, Wahl talks about how professionals definine mental illness; when does a problem become a disorder; and diagnosing mental disorders. He discusses mental illness and stigma; the manifestations, causes, and history of this stigma; the miracle and limitation of modern medications; current research into causation and cure; and the role of media in perpetuating misconceptions about mental illness.
