University of Hartford Community Day 2010 to Offer Free Fun for Families and Friends
The University of Hartford's eighth annual Community Day celebration will take place Saturday, April 17, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., on the lawn outside Gengras Student Union, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Ave., West Hartford. Community Day, which happens rain or shine, has dozens of free events, attractions, and performances for adults and children. This year's Community Day theme recognizes the great Hartford icon Mark Twain, in honor of the 175th anniversary of his birth and 100th anniversary of his death.
In addition to a Mark Twain portrayal by an actor, Twain-related events include mechanical jumping frogs, exhibits from the Mark Twain House and a marathon reading from Adventures of Tom Sawyer and other Twain classics by area celebrities, University faculty and staff, and supporters of the University's Presidents' College.
Other attractions include old-time trolley rides around campus to and from Mark Twain Drive, home to the recently opened University High School of Science and Engineering. Students and teachers at this award-winning magnet high school will show off their robotics, science and performance skills.
Family-friendly activities include a petting zoo, bike rodeo and safety clinic, bounce houses, sand art, balloon animals, face painting, and a hands-on circus workshop. The always popular "Be an Anchor for a Day," where youngsters can deliver a newscast and bring home a complimentary DVD of their performance, will again be offered in the University's TV studio. On safety row, local and University police and public service agencies will display some of their emergency vehicles. Dental, heart, and holistic health stations with blood-pressure and heart-rate checks will also be available.
Music will be performed throughout the event by students in The Hartt School Community Division.
The events and parking at Community Day 2010 at the University of Hartford are free and open to all. Lunch items such as hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks can be purchased at family-friendly prices.
The University of Hartford's annual Community Day is an opportunity to invite neighbors from throughout Greater Hartford to campus for a day of free fun and discovery.
