University of Hartford President Walter Harrison announced today that the University will establish the Governor M. Jodi Rell Center for Public Service in recognition of outgoing Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell and her 25 years of public service as an elected official.

"The University of Hartford is honored to have been asked by Governor Rell to consider a center in her name to promote the ideals and values of public service. Throughout her 25-year career of public service, Governor Rell has stood for the highest standards of integrity in government and public life. Her tenure as governor will be remembered for, among many things, her efforts to restore trust in our elected officials," said University of Hartford President Walter Harrison.

"All of us in Connecticut will always be in her debt for the personal example she set, and we at the University of Hartford are proud to have her name associated with our efforts to promote those ideals throughout our state, our nation, and the world," said Harrison. Governor Rell received an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University in 2001.

The Rell Center for Public Service at the University of Hartford will instruct and encourage integrity and responsible participation in government and public service, traits characterized by the life and career of Gov. Rell.  The Center will offer lectures, panel discussions, symposia, and forums on important local and regional issues.  Teaching and learning opportunities will include internships and service-learning in government and public service as well as research and scholarly inquiry on the nature of integrity in government and public life.  For more information on the Rell Center, go to www.hartford.edu/rellcenter.

"I am honored by the establishment of the Rell Center and I look forward to playing an active role in its activities.  The University of Hartford has always held a special place in my heart and I look forward to our collaboration for many years to come," said Gov. Rell.

A dinner to honor Governor Rell and raise funds for the Rell Center will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 7, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cromwell. For more information about the dinner, contact Stefania Campbell at scampbell@hartford.edu.
