The Scholastic Art Awards and Exhibition is an annual event where high school and middle school students from around the state are able to enter their artwork and portfolios in order to compete for a Portfolio Scholarship to the University of Hartford’s Hartford Art School and a number of other prizes from other art institutions, colleges and universities. The scholarships range from $8,000 to $20,000 annually and renew for four years. In total, the University of Hartford makes a commitment of more than $1.5 million over a four-year period to the winners.
Several thousand pieces of artwork are submitted by Connecticut high school and middle school students for judging. The jury process takes two to three days and will narrow down the submissions to several hundred. The judges consist of more than 40 practicing artists.
The exhibition will run from Sunday, Jan. 15, to Friday. Feb. 3, and the Silpe Gallery’s hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, from 12 noon to 4 p.m.
