Assistant Professor Ben Grossberg and Laura Ahking '15

For the fifth time in six years, a University of Hartford student is part of the prestigious Connecticut Poetry Circuit Student Poets Tour. Like the students before her, Laura Ahking ’15 was mentored by Ben Grossberg, assistant professor of English.

The competition for the five spots on the annual tour is intense. Grossberg guides students through the process, which includes a round of judging at the University, followed by a state competition. Ahking, who also had Grossberg as a professor, says he was very supportive and helped her a great deal as she wrote her winning poetry.

Ahking, a junior majoring in English with a concentration in creative writing, says she has been a serious journal writer since she was six years old. Less than two decades later, she is traveling the state, reading her poems with four student poets from other Connecticut colleges and universities. The tour stopped at the University of Hartford on Feb. 20. Below is an excerpt from Ahking’s reading.
