“Continuing the Legacy: Freedom, Peace, Respect for All” will be the theme of the University of Hartford’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance, being held from 11 a.m. to noon on Monday, Jan. 16, in the University’s Lincoln Theater. This event, which is free and open to the public, will feature an inspirational program of music and reflections commemorating the life and legacy of the civil rights leader. University of Hartford President Walter Harrison, who has led the University since 1998 and will be retiring at the end of June, will deliver the keynote address.

The event will feature musical selections by students and faculty from The Hartt School, The Hartt School Community Division Connecticut Children’s Chorus, the University High School of Science and Engineering, and the University of Hartford Magnet School. The University of Hartford’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance was established in 2007 under President Harrison’s guidance, enabling the campus and surrounding community to gather and reflect upon Dr. King’s legacy. The University’s vibrant relationship with the greater Hartford community is a hallmark of Harrison’s leadership and will remain part of his legacy upon his retirement on June 30, 2017.

Harrison currently serves on many boards in the Hartford area, including Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, Connecticut Conference of Independent Colleges, World Business Capital, The Hartford Consortium for Higher Education, and the MetroHartford Alliance.
