This is my story
This summer, I made my second trip to Herat University in Afghanistan to teach English to the students who will help rebuild their country after years of war.
The students use English-language textbooks in their engineering, math and science courses so it is very important they learn to speak the language. Some of them have had six years of English lessons, but others have had only six months of training and are just learning the basics. One of my challenges was to figure out a way to accommodate everyone.
If there's one thing Afghanistan needs, it's engineers. My students, along with a group who graduated from the University of Hartford in May, will do everything from designing earthquake-proof buildings to creating water purification system to preserving the country's beautiful architecture.
When I made my first trip to Herat University in the summer of 2008, the students were very curious about me. They said they were honored I traveled all the way from the United States to teach them.
