Gengras Student Union to Host the 2018 ACUI Region VIII Conference

The University of Hartford’s Gengras Student Union was selected to host the 2018 Association of College Unions International (ACUI) Region VIII conference. The site selection was made official at the 2017 Region VIII conference held November 17 – 19, 2017 at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. The 2018 conference is scheduled to be held on Friday, November 16 to Sunday, November 18, 2018. The University’s hosting bid was selected against competition from other institutions such as Trinity College (CT). Charles Amerson, Director of Student Centers at the University will serve as the 2018 Host Chairperson. He is currently a member of the Region VIII Leadership Team as the Educational Program Chairperson.
As part of his duties, Amerson will serve as primary liaison to the university and the host hotel (Avon Old Farms Inn) regarding contract and other needs; plan/liaison catering and meals; organize local transportation information and support; on-site logistics, space needs, signage, and AV support; gather local information for distribution to conference attendees; and plan entertainment and local regional trips/excursions during the conference. He will work closely with the conference planning and management teams to provide an inclusive, accessible, and affordable educational experience for members of the region. This is the University’s first attempt in hosting a regional conference. Previously the University shared conference hosting duties with Central Connecticut State University, hosted the regional College Bowl competition on April 23, 2006 and educational workshops such as the “Designing, Marketing and Programming Evolving University Spaces” workshop held on July 17, 2017 in GSU.

Conference attendees typically represent more than 45 universities in New England, Canada, Ireland and the UK, providing networking opportunities with professional colleagues, student employees, and exhibitors.
