Philanthropy & Community Involvement

At the heart of every sorority and fraternity is a proudly represented national philanthropy, a group or an organization that is represented by a sorority or a fraternity, for which their goal is to raise money for that organization; each philanthropy is represented by the same sorority or fraternity nationwide.

Often, members of the community fail to distinguish what differentiates community service and philanthropy. Community Service is active participation in an event geared towards helping your community. Some simple examples would be picking up trash in a park, building a shed, or serving food at a shelter. On the flipside, philanthropy normally involves giving some sort of gift or donation towards a cause, with an fun event that is put on to raise the money.

The National Panhellenic Conference's philanthropy is Circle of Sisterhood. This organization promotes sorority women standing together as one community, we give girls and women an equal chance for rewarding lives and livelihoods through schooling, the learning of a trade, or even a college degree.

At the University of Hartford, each sorority is encouraged to complete a minimum of 15 philanthropy hours. These hours are usually completed by supporting all of the sororities and fraternities philanthropy events, various philanthropic walks in the area, and other community events.

For the Fall 2015 semester:

  • Alpha Xi Delta completed 18 philanthropy hours.
  • Delta Gamma completed 25 philanthropy hours
  • Delta Zeta completed 20 philanthropy hours
  • Phi Mu completed 19 philanthropy hours
  • Sigma Delta Tau completed 18 philanthropy hours

The panhellenic executive board has recently created an award to honor the chapter each semester that completes the most philanthropy hours. For the Fall 2015 semester Delta Gamma won this award.
