In 1936, Eta Akron chapter member Ruth Billow made a plea to the Convention body to adopt sight preservation and aid to those who are blind or visually impaired as Delta Gamma’s philanthropy.
To help accomplish the Delta Gamma Foundation mission, service to those who are blind or visually impaired and activities that preserve sight are encouraged. Collegiate and alumnae groups should concentrate their service activities in these areas because this is what defines Delta Gamma. Alumnae and collegians contribute many hours in meaningful service to those in need.
Examples of service Delta Gammas provide include vision screening, reading to persons who are blind or visually impaired, recording books, organizing holiday parties at centers for those who are blind or visually impaired, and promoting sight preservation education at community and campus health fairs.
The Delta Gamma Foundation was established in 1951 to provide a means for members of Delta Gamma to work together in achieving charitable, scientific, literary and educational objectives. Many non-profit organizations support those who are visually impaired or blind. Preservation of sight receive financial grants from the Delta Gamma Foundation. Delta Gamma has and impressive volunteer base of caring, intelligent women. If there is any organization that demonstrates its accountability and whose members do what they say they do, it is Delta Gamma. The work of Delta Gammas with persons who are blind or visually impaired and in sight preservation is one of the best known Greek philanthropies.
