Small Contractor Development

barney_institute

Small contractors face unique challenges and issues within their industry, such as:

  • Contract readiness
  • Lean management and lean office
  • Bonding and financing
  • How to follow up with general contractors
  • Marketing and more

The Small Contractor Development Program (SCDP) identifies points where contractors need help then focuses intense training and technical assistance in those areas. Offering academies and clinics throughout the year, many of the classes are taught by local general contractors in addition to the Center advisors. Because of this close connection to the construction industry, the program helps small contractors to make connections with general contractors and resource partners through:

  • Matchmakers
  • Service centers

This program is run in conjunction with The Metropolitan District (MDC). Partners include the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), CT Construction Industries Assoc. (CCIA), and the National Assoc. of Women in Construction (NAWIC).

Kimberly Ewalt

CEO of Charter Oak Environmental Services,

Ewalt started her career in public accounting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Although she minored in Environmental Studies, she hadn’t considered a career in the field until her colleague Mark Franson approached her about starting an environmental consulting and engineering firm in Connecticut. They started the firm in 1997.

Ewalt credits the Entrepreneurial Center and Women’s Business Center with helping her over the years, from the first business workshops she took to the integral role it plays today.

It’s through their efforts that Charter Oak has met some of the prime contractors that we perform work for today. It’s an invaluable resource.
