What's Going on at the Barney School of Business?

Along with the University as a whole, The Barney School of Business is going through many new and exciting changes under the new dean, Amy Z. Zeng.

The most visible change comes from the front of Auerbach Hall, where the Barney School is hard at work on our new, state-of-the-art building renovation and addition. The project, which has broken ground, will add 10,000 square feet of space to Auerbach Hall and renovate an additional 1,300 square feet to create a high-tech learning environment. Construction crews have been hard at work erecting the site fencing, clearing the site, and completing demolition of the concrete walkway to make way for the new addition. Crews also completed installation of a new access road to the site and began the building foundation work. The project is on track for a Summer 2019 completion.

Along with more space, comes more programs specific to the Barney School of Business. Celia Lofink, PhD, had a second successful summer running the Summer Business Institute pre-college program for rising high school juniors and seniors. Students from as far away as Texas, Georgia, and Ohio spent three weeks on campus for a full-time business education program aimed at exposing them to both the collegiate environment and the world of business. Students were also able to earn 3 credits to be applied to their college transcripts. The program received rave reviews from the students, with one noting, “I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to work and learn with the SBI and more importantly under you (Professor Celia Lofink) and other amazing professors at the University of Hartford. I cannot wait to apply to UHart!”

Schoolwide, our new dean has been busy getting to know the staff, students, and friends of the Barney School. Aside from various one-on-one meetings, Zeng also met with the Barney Board of Visitors over the summer to learn more about current and past projects within the School.

On Sept. 20, the Barney School of Business successfully held the first annual F.I.R.M. Executive Leadership of The Year Award Dinner at the Hartford Marriott Downtown. The event honored Greg M. Barats, president and chief executive officer of HSB Group Inc., the parent company of Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection & Insurance Company. All proceeds from the event went to scholarships and programming for the University of Hartford’s Barney School of Business.

Academically, the school is thriving. The Barney School has added two new BSBA concentrations, data analytics and project management, and our MBA program’s Cigna partnership is flourishing, accepting a record number of students.

Other notable events this summer included a successful Convocation with over 100 first-year students entering the Barney School of Business, as well as our Liftoff events for both first-year and upperclass students featuring Connecticut State Senator Douglas McCrory.

We at the Barney School of Business look forward to a busy and exciting 2018–19 school year!
