The University of Hartford has a documented legacy of business education in the areas of risk management and insurance, a discipline concerning the identification, evaluation, mitigation, and financing of risks faced by businesses and individuals alike. Housed in the Barney School of Business, our Risk Management and Insurance major offers courses such as Principles of Insurance, risk analysis and management, life insurance, property and liability insurance, social insurance, employee benefits, and InsurTech Venturing.

Our robust curriculum provides students with industry focused knowledge, skills, and professional development in order to prepare them to be leaders and decision makers who are career ready. Career paths include actuarial science, claims oversight, corporate risk management, data analytics, finance, sales/distribution, strategic product marketing and underwriting/book of business assessment.

Our risk management and insurance program is further enhanced by the R. C. Knox Center and the Risk and Disruptive Technology Institute, both of which are committed to sponsoring cross-functional, student-led projects, industry outreach, practical application, and faculty research. Lastly, Barney proudly hosts the ALPHA OMICRON Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma, an international fraternity aimed at promoting student interest in insurance, risk management and actuarial science as professions.

We host various speaker events and activities to facilitate student networking with industry professionals, which results in career-based internships and full-time positions.
