Ellsworth Dinner-Students Enjoy Leadership Lessons and Dinner with Successful Alumnus

On October 18, 2016, the Barney School of Business held one of its bi-annual “Ellsworth Leadership Dinners”. This isthe 14thyear such events have been held. The Ellsworth Leadership dinner gives the BarneyLeadership Council comprised of the school’s top students the ability to network with high-levelprofessionals and community leaders across a varietyof industries. This year’s event was held at The Society Room in Hartford, CT.  

This Fall’s keynote speaker was Andrew Kaplan, a Barney School alumni from the class of ’89. Since graduating from the Barney School Kaplan has worked at major investment banks, handling their deal structures, mergers and acquisitions,and trading. He is also a co-founder of A to B Capital Management, formedin 2009, and manages the A to B Capital Special Situations Fund. Additionally, for the last 21 years he has been the Vice President of Barry Kaplan Associates, a leading multinational firm in financial public relations for private and public companies. Kaplan is also on the Board of Directors for three separate publically traded companies and oversees capital markets for a company where he was once a board member.  

Kaplan encouraged students to find their passion, and then be relentless in pursuit of their career goals.  He emphasized the importance of working hard and taking responsibility even for things that fall outside of your job expectations.  Kaplan also stressed the need to network and to earn and maintain a good reputation.
