Traffic Simulation and Signal Optimization

We analyzed a study area consists of nine intersections on Upper Albany Ave. between Prospective Ave. to Sterling St. Traffic turning volume were collected during AM peak hour using JAMAR handheld counts and travel time was measured.

Two microscopic traffic simulation models (CORSIM and VISSIM) have been used to study the existing traffic conditions and evaluate future scenarios which incorporate some proposed improvements.

The study also designed new traffic signal controls and generated an optimized and coordinated signal timing plan along the Avenue in order to reduce vehicle delays and stops.

Based on the simulation results, it is recommended to realign Blue Hills Avenue, implement the optimized signal strategy and consider actuated pedestrian phases. (Sponsor: Urban Engineers, Inc.).
