Dr. Hagen is Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education at the University of Hartford’s Hartt School. Prior to her arrival at the University of Hartford, Dr. Hagen was an associate professor and coordinator of the music education program at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where she taught courses in the choral music and general music sequence and conducted the Bel Canto Women’s Choir. Before working in higher education, Dr. Hagen was a public school music educator in upstate New York, where she taught elementary general music and high school choral music for eleven years.
An active choral musician, Dr. Hagen has performed at both divisional and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association. She has directed honors choirs and served as a clinician and adjudicator for choral festivals in New York, Michigan, Minnesota, and North Dakota.
Dr. Hagen’s research is focused on gender roles in music education, mentoring and induction of the beginning music teacher, and music teacher identity. She has presented her research at Desert Skies Symposium, Society for Music Teacher Education (SMTE) Symposium, Narrative Soundings International Conference, National Association for Music Education (NAfME) National Conference, and multiple state conferences. Dr. Hagen received the B.M. and M.M. in music education from Ithaca College and the Ph.D. in music education with a choral conducting cognate from Michigan State University.
