The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) presented a “Leadership Award” to the University of Hartford’s Entrepreneurial Center (EC) in a ceremony at the State Capitol on March 4, 2015. Sandra Cahill, Director, received the award on behalf of the Center, which was recognized for the significant impact it has had on opening up opportunities for women in construction through its Women’s Business Center, which is funded in part by the US Small Business Administration.
Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman attended the celebration and proclaimed March 4, “Women in Construction Day”. The Lieutenant Governor also received an award, along with 10 other individuals and organizations, including State Senator Dante Bartolomeo, The Metropolitan District (MDC), and CT Construction Industries Association.
“We are proud to support the hard-working and capable women-in-construction develop as business owners and prepare to take on larger projects. It is part of our Women’s Business Center mission to help government reach its goal of awarding 5% of federal contracts to women-owned businesses, a goal which has never been met.”, states Sandra Cahill, Director of the Entrepreneurial Center.
The event also showcased a free training program that the EC and MDC are offering, in collaboration, to local, small contractors. Attendees of the awards ceremony were given a taste of upcoming training topics with presentations on Lean Management, Developing a Relationship with a Financial Institution and Bonding.
