Capitol Symphonic Winds

Cap Winds is the region’s largest auditioned community concert band.

Capitol Symphonic Winds (Cap Winds) is an ensemble composed of dedicated adult instrumentalists that offers challenging repertoire and exceptional guidance in a fun, rewarding environment. Performances take place in December and May, with occasional outreach and collaborative performances scheduled as well. Conducted by Dan D'Addio

Audition Information

If you are a new student, please click below to request an audition. Current members of Capitol Symphonic Winds do not need to re-audition for the ensemble. 

Tuition and Rehearsals

Tuition is $120 annually, or $550 per semester for University credit.*
*A one-time $25 registration fee may apply. Please contact hcdbills@hartford.edu or call 860.768.4451 to register for University credit.

Rehearsals meet on Wednesdays, 7:15–9:15 p.m. in Bliss Music Room.

Greater Hartford Youth Wind Ensemble

The Greater Hartford Youth Wind Ensemble (GHYWE) is composed of dedicated high-school students in grades 10–12. GHYWE performs advanced wind-ensemble repertoire, including traditional, modern, and new works. GHYWE originated in the 1950s from the Hartt Youth Symphonic Band and the Connecticut Valley Youth Wind Ensemble. Conducted by Glen Adsit.

Audition Information

Auditions for this academic-year ensemble are held in June at our annual Audition Festival. At the audition, students are expected to perform scales, a solo or etudes demonstrating current skill level, and sight-read a piece (provided at the audition).

Tuition and Rehearsals

Tuition is $220 for HCD private lesson students, and $600 for all others.*
*A one-time $25 registration fee may apply.

Rehearsals meet on Sundays, 5:30–7:30 p.m. in Bliss Music Room.

Harmony Winds is an intermediate woodwind ensemble for advanced middle school and early high school students looking to refine skills and perform at a high level. Harmony Winds performs twice annually: fall and spring. Conducted by Alan Francis.
