A Concert for the Community: Beethoven Symphony No. 9 and Schumann Piano Concerto

As a gift to the community, The Hartt School Orchestra and the Hartford Chorale present A Concert for the Community: Beethoven Symphony No. 9 and Schumann Piano Concerto on Friday, October 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the Maxwell M. & Ruth R. Belding Theater, Bushnell Center for Performing Arts, 166 Capitol Avenue, Hartford.  This performance is FREE and open to the public.

Maestro Edward Cumming leads the orchestra and the Hartford Chorale in the performance, which will feature more than 250 performers. Solo vocalists include Anush Avetisyan, soprano; Rachel Weishoff, mezzo-soprano; Stephen Clark, bass; and Hartt alumnus Luis Aguilar Regalado’15, tenor.

“It’s a special honor for me to conduct this concert, which we’re offering free to the people of Greater Hartford,” said Maestro Cumming, director of orchestral activities at The Hartt School. “And it’s especially fitting to have Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, with its message of universal brotherhood, be played by the Hartt Orchestra, whose members historically hail from all over the United States and from many foreign countries.”

The program opens with Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, featuring the internationally acclaimed pianist and Hartt faculty member, David Westfall.

This concert is being made possible in part by a generous gift from The Richard P. Garmany Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.

"I'm thrilled that the Richard P. Garmany Fund can assist in making this performance possible," said David Polk, advisor to the fund. "Richard was keenly interested in helping to make music and the arts accessible to as many people as possible. I know he would have been delighted to support The Hartt School and the Bushnell in bringing this extraordinary free concert to this community."
