MED 616 History and Philosophy of Music Education

This course investigates the historical, philosophical, and psychological bases of music education in schools from ancient Hebrew tradition to the present. Emphasized is the influence of educational philosophy, religion, cultural practices, and personal beliefs on the inclusion of music education in schooling through the centuries. Contemporary history includes the events, persons, and organizations whose leadership led to the birth of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) and other significant professional music education organizations.
