New Dance Department Office Coordinator, Rochelle Moore

Rochelle MooreHCD would like to welcome Rochelle Moore as Office Coordinator for the Dance Department. Moore has an array of experience working in journalism, hospitality, corporate, and education. Mainly, she has worked as a sales coordinator at several hotels, including the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in California and the Marriott Hartford Downtown. Additionally, she has worked as a freelance journalist for newspapers such as the Norwich Bulletin, Springfield Republican, and the Hartford Courant.

Rochelle also brings a musical background to HCD. She was a first-chair bassoonist at the University of Northern Colorado during her freshman and sophomore years. Rochelle holds a BA in Journalism from the University of Connecticut. Despite her change in paths, Rochelle still plays the bassoon from time to time.

Early Childhood Music Education

Spread the joy of music this holiday season with our early-childhood winter music classes! Join us for First Steps in Music with Connie Greenwood at our main campus in West Hartford, or our new Suzuki Early-Childhood Education course in Simsbury with Suzuki instructors and violinists Alexandra Hadden and Donna Ngai, along with guitarist David Madsen. Classes run January through March of 2018. Learn more.

Gordon Beck Cast in Production of Rags

Former Summer Musical Theatre Junior participant Gordon Beck, age nine, from Tolland, Conn., was part of the cast of the Goodspeed Opera House's production of Rags as an understudy for the part of David Herskowitz.

Aaron Ouellette performed with 2017 NafME Jazz Ensemble

Aaron Ouellette, a sophomore at RHAM High School and trumpet player in Connecticut Youth Symphony and Greater Hartford Youth Wind Ensemble, participated in the 2017 National Association of Music Educators Jazz Ensemble in Orlando, Fl., that took place in late November. He was also named a 2018 Grammy Band Jazz Finalist.

Student Daniel Wang Performs in Holiday Pops Concert

HCD viola student Daniel Wang, student of Melinda Daetsch, performed the Handel Casadesus concerto in B minor (1. Allegro Moderato) with the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra in Ithaca, N.Y., on Sunday December 10. Wang was invited to perform as the winner of the junior division at the 2017 Cayuga Chamber Orchestra Lee Strebel Memorial Youth Concerto Competition.

Anna Grudskaya and Perry Roth to perform at 40th International Saxophone Symposium

HCD faculty Anna Grudskaya (piano) and Perry Roth (saxophone) have been invited to perform at The 40th International Saxophone Symposium hosted by the United States Navy Band. Held at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, the faculty duo will perform Viktor Ullmann's Slavonic Rhapsody which is the foundation of Roth's doctoral research. December Hamilton Heights Performance

Two quartets from The Hartt School performed at Hamilton Heights on Dec. 1. Performers included HCD receptionist and violinist Julie Haring, who will complete her Masters in Violin Performance at The Hartt School this May. Hamilton Heights residents are looking forward to seeing Hartt students return, as several HCD chamber groups perform on Dec. 15.

Music by Composer Jessica Rudman on New album

Creative Studies Dept. Chair Jessica Rudman’s work for solo trumpet, “Elegy,” is featured on Kate Amrine’s debut album As I Am. The album features music by women composers for trumpet in solo and ensemble settings. Details are available online. Amrine recently performed Rudman’s “Elegy” and other works from the album at release parties in New York City on Nov. 14 and in Baltimore on Nov. 27.

Students can learn more about composing in our Creative Studies programs. Enrollment is open now for winter programs.

DEC. 15: MEET A BALLERINA at THE WEST HARTFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY

Meet-a-Ballerina

Friday, Dec. 15, 10:30 a.m.
Location: West Hartford Public Library (Noah Webster branch)

Children ages 3–5 will participate in a dance class alongside a real ballerina and will have the opportunity to pose for photographs with the ballerina. Parents and siblings are welcome to observe the event.

HCD Chamber Ensembles are continuing their tradition of performing at Hamilton Heights in West Hartford. The performance will include several of our chamber ensembles, and will conclude with 20 minutes of Christmas carols with audience participation.

2017 Nutcracker Performance Dates

The 2017 production of The Hartt School Community Division’s (HCD) The Nutcracker is featuring professional dancers in key roles, as well as new choreography and costuming for several sections of the ballet. Ballet Des Moines’ Eleanor Danaan and Eugeniu Cilenco will join the production for the second week of performances (Dec. 15, 16, and 17).

Admission is $30 for adults, $20 seniors, $20 for students with ID, and $15 for children 12 and under. Tickets for the Sunday, Dec. 17 performance are sold out. Please call the University Box Office at 860.768.4228 or 800.274.8587, or visit hartford.edu/tickets to purchase tickets.

St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 197 Bushy Hill Road, Simsbury, Conn.

Voce will join with the Connecticut Children's Chorus's Primi Voci in presenting carols and anthems of the holiday season. This concert has quickly become a favorite among audience members and is a beautiful opportunity to celebrate the holidays.

Tickets for the concerts can be purchased online or at the door: $25 for general admission, $20 in advance (Hartford performance only), and $10 for students. Tickets for the Simsbury performance are sold out.

DEC. 16: SUZUKI STRINGS GROUP CLASS CONCERTS

DEC. 16: 3RD ANNUAL TUBA CHRISTMAS

Location: Connecticut Valley at Trinity on Main, New Britain, Conn.

HCD Tuba and Euphonium instructor Walter Gibson will be conducting all the assembled tubas and euphoniums at the 3rd Annual, family-friendly, Tuba Christmas. All tuba and euphonium players, any age, are welcome to participate. Participants must pay a registration fee. Prizes will be awarded to participants.
