I enjoy teaching students in Hillyer for many reasons. I deeply identify with our students. Many students enter Hillyer College, having yet to realize their learning potential. I remember being that student when I graduated from high school. As a professor in Hillyer, I have the privilege to help students overcome the barriers that may have affected their learning. Hillyer students are eager to remove the obstacles that have gotten in their way, and I enjoy seeing the satisfaction they experience in that moment. Instructionally and philosophically, Hillyer College is a community that strives to guide, support and cultivate the efforts of students’ to grow within the two-year college. As a result, Hillyer College embodies the belief in “the power of yet”, which, builds a college culture that is focused on the journey of learning just as much as the destination of a degree. I enjoy teaching Hillyer students because as they embrace the journey their vulnerability is exposed, and having the honor to witness that moment is truly seeing the light in their eyes shine.
