Tariq Farid, the founder and CEO of Edible Arrangements International, will talk about how “The American Dream Is Alive and Well” as part of the Rogow Distinguished Visiting Lecturers Program on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 5 p.m. in the University of Hartford’s Lincoln Theater, presented by the University’s Barney School of Business. Farid’s talk is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Click here to register.

Farid launched the first Edible Arrangements store in 1999 in East Haven. After 16 years and 1,200 stores worldwide, Edible Arrangements is recognized as an industry leader. It has ranked first in its category in Entrepreneur magazine’s annual Franchise 500 list for the past eight years. Inc. magazine listed Edible Arrangements as one of the Top 5 businesses in Connecticut and recognized it in 2012 with a Hire Power Award, which spotlights private businesses that have led the way in creating American jobs. In 2009, Farid was awarded the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Retail and Consumer Products category in Metro New York.

In 2013, Farid established the Tariq Farid Foundation as a way to support causes both at home and around the world. To date, the foundation’s contributions have benefited hospitals, schools, community centers, soup kitchens, and revitalization efforts, as well as organizations fighting poverty and childhood cancer and those promoting leadership opportunities for youth. Farid has also instituted the Edible Cares Fund, which provides assistance to Edible Arrangements store employees, friends, and families in times of extreme need due to natural disasters, family misfortune, illness, or other causes.

From his native Pakistan, Farid moved to the United States with his family at age 11 and settled in West Haven, Conn. At 17, with a $5,000 loan from his parents, he purchased a local flower shop and, within two years, expanded his operation to four highly successful stores. Edible Arrangements International is a U.S.-based franchising business that melds the traditional gift fruit basket with design concepts inspired by the floral business.

The Rogow Distinguished Visiting Lecturers Program brings celebrated authors, journalists, historians, academics, and artists to the Greater Hartford area. The series is part of the wide array of public programming that the University offers, fulfilling an important responsibility to serve the larger community of which it is a part.
