UHart Business Alums Return to Discuss “The Intersection of Risk and Insurance”

The University of Hartford’s Barney School of Business, in partnership with Corporate Risk Solutions, LLC, will present the fourth annual symposium on “The Intersection of Risk and Insurance,” on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 5 p.m., in the University’s Millard Auditorium. The program will feature a panel discussion among three top experts in the risk/insurance field who are all alumni of the University of Hartford.

Taking part in the panel discussion, after making individual presentations will be: Joseph Coughlin, a 1980 University of Hartford graduate and current member of its board of regents, is chief executive officer and founder of Corporate Risk Solutions, LLC; Marvin Kelly CPCU, AU, who earned a bachelor of science degree in Insurance from the Barney School of Business, has 35 years of experience in the insurance industry, and is currently executive director of the Texas Property and Casualty Insurance Guaranty Association; and Kyle Parsons, a 2009 Barney School of Business graduate, who is a business process improvement consultant at FM Global.

Martin Roth, dean of the University’s Barney School of Business, will offer opening and closing remarks at the program. The symposium will be followed by a reception from 7 to 8 p.m. The program is free and open to the public. To register for the symposium, click here.

Coughlin has more than 30 years of experience in the consulting, advisory, underwriting, and brokerage segments of the insurance industry. He has completed many complex engagements and provided ongoing stewardship for many of the largest and most intricate transactions within the private equity and distressed debt markets. Before forming Corporate Risk Solutions in March of 2002, Coughlin founded and served as president of JFC Consulting, Inc., the first truly innovative risk advisor to the sponsored alternative capital sector.

Coughlin has been an active investor in a number of private equity and venture capital partnerships. He has also been an active individual investor in a host of start-up companies and has served on many for-profit and not-for-profit boards. He currently sits on the University of Hartford Board of Regents, the Westchester-Putnam Council of the Boy Scouts of America and the University of Notre Dame Arts and Letters Advisory Council. He is an Eagle Scout.

A three-sport athlete as an undergraduate at the University of Hartford, Coughlin has been a University regent since 2011, and a member of the board of regents’ Athletics Committee since 2012 and its Athletic Development Committee since 2013.

Kelly, CPCU, MBA, AU, has 35 years of experience in the insurance industry and has been the executive director of the Texas Property and Casualty Insurance Guaranty Association since 1992. Kelly has served on the CPCU Society’s Board of Governors from 2001 to 2003 and has served as president/chairman of the CPCU Society in 2008 and 2009. His prior experience includes underwriting for Transamerica Insurance Company in Hartford and as a commercial lines underwriter for Chubb & Son Insurance in Pittsburgh. He served as the risk manager for the cities of Beaumont and Austin in the state of Texas for 6 years. He was hired in 1992 to privatize a state agency into a non-profit, which was named one of the “Best Places to Work” in the State of Texas for 2007.

Kelly has received numerous awards including, Who’s Who among Top Executives in 1998; CPCU National Standard Setter Award 2000-2001; 2009 National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA) Rhythm Pounder Award; the 2010 NAAIA Hall of Fame Award; and he was listed in the 27th edition of the Dictionary of International Biography in Cambridge England in 1999. He has been involved with the Citizen Ambassador Program since 1993, as he participated in delegations to Russia in 1993, South Africa in 1995, and served as a delegation leader to China in 2010 and Brazil in 2012. Kelly retired from the US Army Reserve as a major in 1996.

Parsons, who has worked for commercial property insurer FM Global since graduating magna cum laude in 2009 from the University’s  Barney School of Business, began his career as a property underwriter in the company's Boston operations. In 2012, he was appointed to the position of Account Manager, responsible for a large, complex and diverse book of property business. In 2015, he was appointed to the business process improvement team and currently works with FM Global employees from around the world to enhance current business processes and achieve efficiency gains across the organization.

While at the Barney School of Business, Parsons majored in Insurance and Finance and was also captain of the University's men's golf team. He is a Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) Anita Benedetti Scholar.
