When Star Wars fanatics line up to finally see “The Force Awakens” at the Carmike Cinema in Lisbon, Conn., they can pass the time looking at a mural on the theater’s windows. That’s where Courtney Luft, a senior in the University of Hartford’s Hartford Art School, created paintings of Star Wars characters BB-8, C-3PO, R2-D2, and Kylo Ren. The mural is one of several she has done at the theater, where she has worked for four years.

These opportunities to show her artistic talent are welcome and different from what Courtney normally does in the classroom. “I actually don’t paint in my free time at all,” says Courtney, a visual communication design major. “I like to draw a lot, but I’m used to the computer now because we’ve been trained on it in class. [When I’m in class] I love branding and I love coming up with logos.”

She may use a computer now, but it was her drawing by hand ability that put her on the path to the University. During high school in Griswold, Conn., she planned to major in architecture once she got to college. Butshe took an art class for the first time during her senior year, and a new dream was formed.

“I took the class just for fun,” Courtney explains. “My teacher yelled at me for not taking any art classes sooner! She said I should be in advanced classes and make it my major. It had always been just a hobby, but my parents had been telling me for years I should do something in the arts.”

So Courtney switched gears. She went to a local community college for two years and then transferred to the Hartford Art School for her junior and senior years. In her final two semesters, she is busy with studio classes and building a portfolio for her job search. She hopes the Star Wars paintings, as well as earlier paintings she did for “The Hunger Games” and “The Peanuts Movie,” will help her stand out from the crowd.
