Park Ranger
Upon my high school graduation, I decided that I wanted to be a park ranger. I began serving as one at the Springfield (Mass.) Armory National Historic Site, where I am the only female and African American park ranger. I have also served as a ranger at the National Park Service site at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, and am currently considering positions at Zion National Park (Utah) and Outer Banks, N.C.
I have been recently nominated to become a Peace Corps volunteer and look forward to helping those in other countries. Here at home, I am developing a program to address gun crime and gang violence to middle school students in the city of Springfield.
I knew that I wanted to attend the University of Hartford as a freshman in high school, made a campus visit the next year, and was accepted during the fall of my senior year before my friends had even applied to colleges. Setting future goals and then following through on them is part of who I am. In third grade, I fell in love with finance and knew right then and there that I wanted to study business. As an eight-year old competing in a stock simulation contest, I outperformed high-school students. A decade later, I began my studies in entrepreneurship and economics/finance in the University’s Barney School of Business.
During my years at the University, I have been a saxophonist in the pep band, an event programmer for the Campus Activities Team, and on the executive board of the Newman Club. I have found the study abroad opportunities invaluable, having studied in Jamaica, Bermuda, and England. I am currently in Greece for my final semester before graduating in May.
My future career will ideally bring together my two loves: business and working for the federal government, perhaps as a foreign-service officer or financial manager.
