New Centralized Tutoring Center for Fall 2019

August 22, 2019
Submitted By: Jessica Nicklin

Beginning fall 2019, the University of Hartford will launch a new centralized, one-stop-shopping tutoring center. The University’s Center for Reading and Writing, the former Student Success Tutoring services, and several other previously distinct tutoring units across colleges and disciplines will be merged into the new Centralized Tutoring Center.

The new center will offer tutoring services to all registered students in writing across the curriculum and content courses that are particularly in high demand. In each fall semester, first-year-students will be the primary target audience for center services, but non-traditional and transfer students may also utilize tutoring support. Graduate students are eligible for writing tutoring.

The tutoring center staff includes a director, assistant director, graduate assistant, and dozens of exemplary undergraduate and graduate students who tutor in writing, math, social sciences, physical sciences, engineering, business, to name a few, and other courses and majors as well.

An exciting aspect consistent with the development of this new tutoring model is the expansion of mandatory peer tutor training. In addition to learning about typical tutorial dynamics and tutor-tutee rights and responsibilities, campus experts will focus on mental health issues, cultural competency, issues associated with diversity and equity, and other such crucial interpersonal dynamics prevalent in post-secondary education. Under the auspices of the Center, such training will also be provided to the University’s undergraduate preceptors.

The current hub of the new Center will be in the former Center for Reading and Writing in Harrison Libraries, lower level, room L102. General business and inquiries can be conducted at 860.768.4131. Operating hours and tutors’ schedules will be provided shortly after the start of the semester.

For additional information, contact the Center Director, Pat Morelli at 860.768.4139 (pmorelli@hartford.edu), Assistant Director Laura Corey 860.768.4131 (lcorey@hartford.edu) or Graduate Assistant Christina Harriau at 860.768.4131 (harriau@hartford.edu).   Staff members will be available beginning August 19. Tutors will begin tutoring in phased stages shortly after the fall semester begins.
