UHART VISITING PROFESSOR:

Encounters with the Unknown: The Cinema of Dakota Nanton

April 15, 2020, Wilde Auditorium, 6:30 p.m.

A screening of short films followed by a public discussion with UHart Visiting Professor and Jackie Mclean Fellow, Dakota Nanton. The program “Encounters with the Unknown” encompasses a wide range of work including animation, experimental, narrative and documentary exploring liminal spaces from dreams, to visions to the afterlife.

Dakota Nanton is an experimental filmmaker from Boulder, Colorado. His artwork and films draw inspiration from such diverse influences as comic books, folklore, and science fiction to create meditative ruminations on desire and death. Borrowing from the images and iconographies of the past, and mixing old techniques with new, he explores the complexities and contradictions of living in the modern world. His work has been exhibited in museums and festivals around the world including the Denver International Film Festival, Massachusetts Independent Film Festival, Calcutta International, among others and is held in permanent collections in the United States, Canada, Italy, Australia, Egypt and New Zealand.
