A total of 220 Middle school Mathletes® from 23 Hartford County schools will compete in the 2020 Hartford Chapter MATHCOUNTS Competition at the University of Hartford on Saturday, Feb. 1. from 12:15- 3 p.m. The event will take place in Gengras Student Union (GSU) on the University's campus.

Teachers and students have been preparing for the competition since the fall. Students will compete individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches on subjects that include algebra, probability, statistics, and geometry. The event will kick off with two guest speakers: Thomas Vasko, PE, PhD, Professor of Engineering from Central Connecticut State University, presenting Careers in Engineering and Jennifer Beineke, Professor of Mathematics from Western New England University, presenting Splendor in the Graphs. Graph theory can provide an entertaining analysis of certain games and puzzles. Using elementary results, we will explore brainteasers such as Dots-and-Boxes, Bridg-It, Paradoxical Pennies, and Perplexing Prisoners. That should be preparation enough to set us off on a mathematical sort of safari.

Followed by the presenters will be the MATHCOUNTS Countdown Round. The top sixteen Mathletes are paired in a fast-paced, oral competition, competing against each other and the clock to solve problems. Chapter winners will advance to the statewide competition on March 7 that will be held at the University of Hartford and those winners will advance to the 2020 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition to be held in Orlando, Fla., on May 10 & 11.

The competition is organized by the Connecticut Society of Professional Engineers, hosted by the University of Hartford and sponsored by The Connecticut Engineers Education Foundation.

The University of Hartford’s College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture (CETA) is proud of the continued partnership with MATHCOUNTS over the last thirty-six years. We strive to offer a unique experience for the young students participating in the competitions, continue to promote the importance of STEM in academics, and expose the students to the University at an early stage in their education.

MATHCOUNTS is a national program designed to improve math skills among the nation’s students. The program focuses on middle school students who are at a crucial stage in developing and sustaining math interest and ability. Students who do not begin developing strong problem-solving, logical thinking and analytical abilities in middle school will face an uphill battle later in life if they wish to pursue a medical, scientific, mathematical, engineering or technical career.
