Submitted By: Anne Berry

Assistant Professor of Architecture Timothy Adekunle has received a fellowship from the Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation to travel to Japan in order to conduct a study of historical timber buildings. The research Adekunle will engage in through this fellowship is directly applicable to the content of his Design of Wood Structures course, and is broadly relevant to his interests in areas of sustainable architecture and design technology. This study will explore the intersections between architecture, environmental sustainability, cultural heritage, historical values, use of local materials, and methods of construction. Through this immersive experience, Adekunle aims to enhance his teaching and scholarship, and expand upon the high-quality curricular offerings within the University of Hartford’s Department of Architecture.

Japan is renowned for its impressive timber buildings; however, few scholars have studied what impact the country’s traditional design practices have on environmental preservation. To develop an understanding of the relationship between architectural design, cultural influences, and the environment, Adekunle will visit Buddhist temples and monasteries, schools, and other historical timber structures during his travels in order to gain insights into sustainable solutions that have broad implications for the field of architecture and design pedagogy.
