Larry Alan Smith will be finishing his service as dean of The Hartt School at the end of this academic year, and the University will be conducting a national search for the next dean, Provost Fred Sweitzer has announced.

"When Larry was appointed, it was a two-year appointment with the option to extend," Sweitzer says. "Larry has given us three years and has done a wonderful job. When I announced his appointment, I said that he would bring fresh ideas and new energy to the role and that he would be able to hit the ground running. Well, it was more like he hit the ground sprinting and has not stopped; he has both generated and engendered many fresh ideas."

Sweitzer is in the process of interviewing search consulting firms and both he and President Gregory Woodward will seek the active involvement of The Hartt School community in identifying and affirming the most pressing needs for Hartt and the essential qualities the next leader will need.

"Let me express my deep appreciation to Larry Alan for all he has given to the school he loves," Sweitzer wrote in a letter to Hartt faculty and staff. "I know you join me in wishing him well."
