Rochelle DuFord to Speak at March 9 Humanities Center Lecture

March 05, 2021
Submitted By: Bryan Sinche
The next Humanities Center lecture takes place on Tuesday, March 9, as Dr. Rochelle DuFord speaks on "Negative Solidarities: Fighting for Domination." The lecture will take place at 5 p.m. in Mali I (Dana Hall 201) and will be livestreamed via Zoom (link below).

In her talk, DuFord will explore the phenomenon of “negative solidarity,” a position upending traditional notions of solidarity that tend to work toward liberation and overcoming injustice. Negative solidarity, conversely, is the fight to dominate and oppress, resulting in a social cohesion that supports and furthers domination. Professor DuFord will examine negative solidarity in the larger context of whether we have a moral obligation to be in solidarity or to participate in activist causes, using it as a lens through which to see groups that one must, from a moral standpoint, refrain from joining.
