Message From the University Compliance Committee

Submitted By: Justin Bell

This notice is to remind you of your responsibilities under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act or FERPA, a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records and applies to all schools that receive Federal funds, including the University of Hartford.

FERPA generally prohibits you from disclosing a student’s educational record without written consent from the student to release such records (see student consent form here). FERPA does not prohibit the release of "directory" information such as a student's name, address, and telephone number.

FERPA is enforced by the U.S. Department of Education, which has the authority to audit institutions for FERPA compliance. FERPA violations by faculty or staff may result in the loss of federal funding for the University. All faculty and staff are expected to understand their legal obligations under FERPA and to ensure that education records are not used for inappropriate purposes or disclosed in an unauthorized manner.

Questions about FERPA or requests for student records may be directed to the Office of General Counsel at extension 4275 or the Center for Student Success at extension 4999 or email at css@hartford.edu.
