Recent physical therapy graduate Jason Hubeny D’21 has received the prestigious Mary McMillan Scholarship Award from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). The national award recognizes students for superior scholastic performance, potential for future contributions to physical therapy, and service to APTA. Hubeny is the third winner from the University of Hartford to receive the award and the first at the Doctor of Physical Therapy level.

Hubeny is a graduate of UHart’s combined BS/DPT program, earning a bachelor’s degree in health science in 2018 and a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) in 2021. During his time as a student, he was involved with the Physical Therapy Student Association, the UHart Pep Band, and performed as the UHart mascot Howie the Hawk at athletic events. He also volunteered at the on-campus Farmington Valley Transition Academy, which serves young adults with developmental disabilities.

Hubeny credits Mary Gannotti, professor of physical therapy, with helping him find his passion as a pediatric physical therapist and recommending that he apply for the Mary McMillan scholarship.

“I am looking to work in pediatric physical therapy at a clinic or hospital in Connecticut to help children with neurodevelopmental disabilities achieve their goals,” he said. “I plan to eventually become a Pediatric Certified Specialist (PCS) and open a pediatric clinic.”
