Stewart Frankel, Associate Professor in Biology, and his collaborator Dr. Blanka Rogina (University of Connecticut Health Center) have a paper in press in the journal “Frontiers in Genetics” titled “Evolution, Chance, and Aging.” The paper reviews recent advances in several areas of biology that have increased our understanding of aging, and provides some theoretical contributions related to how aging may have evolved. Aging is often viewed as the breakdown of the body’s machine, affecting all individuals and species in a similar way, but the underlying phenomenon may be very complex and differ from one individual to another, as well as from one species to another.  Evolutionary theory and genetics provide a road map for navigating this complexity.
