Alcohol Awareness Month: October

October 13, 2021
Submitted By: Healthy Hawks

October is Alcohol Awareness Month. Earlier this week Healthy Hawks posted information about social norming regarding alcohol use.

Today’s UNote tests your knowledge of the Alcohol Policy with some Q & A below.

The complete Alcohol Policy can be found on page 10 of the Student Handbook found online.

Q: I am over 21. Can’t I have as much alcohol as I want in my on-campus living space?

A: Since January 2019, the UHart Alcohol Policy sets maximums for the amount of alcohol that can be in one’s assigned living space. Each student who is at least 21, is allowed 15 beers, or 1.5 liters of wine, or 1 pint of hard alcohol (empties count towards this maximum count)

Q: If I live with 5 others over the age of 21, does that mean we can have 6 times the limit in our apartment?

A: No, there is a limit for each housing unit. Regardless of the number of students over 21 in a residential living space, possession is limited to 60 beers, or 3 liters of wine, or 1 liter of hard alcohol per living unit.

Q: Can I get in trouble for empty bottles of alcohol?

A: Empty bottles and containers are counted toward the total quantity limits.

Q: I enjoy using the empty alcohol packaging to decorate my walls. Is that allowed?

A: No. The use of alcohol packaging or signage for decoration is prohibited.

Q: I am over 21, but my roommate is not. Where am I to store alcohol in my assigned living space?

A: Alcohol should only be stored on the side of the room where the student who is over 21 resides. In apartment and suite style housing, the alcohol should only be stored in the room of the student or students who are 21. Any shared refrigerator (i.e. in common kitchen) should not be used for the purpose of storing alcohol. The goal of this expectation is to avoid the appearance of underage drinking. Please see the Residential Life section of the Student Handbook: ‘Alcohol Storage & Consumption Expectations In ‘Mixed Age’ Rooms.’

Q: How will my guests know the University policies?

A: You are responsible for the behavior of guests/visitors. This includes making sure guests both know and comply with University policy.
