Dr. Kerry Emanuel, the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of atmospheric science at MIT will give a public lecture “Climate Risk” on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. in Wilde Auditorium. A reception will follow. The event is being co-sponsored by the MIT Club of Hartford and the Department of Physics in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Climate change has become a central issue for society and is much in the news. While one must resist the temptation to blame every instance of bad weather on climate change, it is of utmost importance to understand the nature of the various risks we face, including the uncertainties associated with the risks. Dr. Emanuel will briefly review the scientific evidence for anthropogenic climate change and why and how we should treat it as we treat many other more familiar risks, focusing on one particular weather hazard: hurricanes. He will also discuss how contemporary science is helping us evaluate the nature and magnitude of hurricane risk, both in the present and in the future, and this risk is being communicated to those whose welfare is at stake.

The lecture is free and open to the public but registration is requested. There is a cost of $20 for attending the reception, payable at the event.
